From the President Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone out there. We have had a very successful year. Our Monday bingos are growing in numbers thanks to Heather, Barb, Joe, Russell (aka Rupert), and Fran. The membership hasn’t reached the magic 200 mark but it is darn close. The Friday dinners have been a big hit thanks to Charlie and Maude. Remember to book a Friday if you want to do a dinner. We will be doing them every second Friday starting in the New Year. We’ve had our share of problems with the old building to overcome but with all the help we somehow pulled through. Once again the volunteers did a great job but we are spreading ourselves mighty thin and we could really use more help. You will be receiving accidental death insurance forms in the mail. Every member is automatically covered for three thousand dollars. If you don't complete the forms then any money paid out will be paid to your estate. If you fill out the beneficiary card the insurance company will contact you. All members are now covered by our Memorial Fund so if you are killed at work your children and step-children would be entitled to a bursary for higher education. These coverages were put in place by the Provincial and Grand Aeries. The changes to the bylaws will get a third reading on Dec. 20 and then be sent to Grand for approval Hope to see more of you at the meetings in the new year.
The Langley Rec. Centre gave us a keg conveyor for the lounge. It is a all aluminium and can be adapted to fit our stairs. The drivers from BDL let us know about it and we would thank them and Langley rec. for the donation.
Our bylaw committee will be meeting on Fri. Nov. 11 to update our local bylaws. Once complete they will have be approved by grand and three readings at our meetings.
We are twelve members away from reaching the magic 200 number . We still have upgrades to do to the hall and the lounge just need the time and assistance to do it. We are currently looking for a canopy for the front entrance.
Brigade Days 2011
Brigade Days was
a success. We sold out of everything we had . The cabana is
cleaned up and put away till next year.
Joe
Lamy made a presentation donation of $500.00 to Story Time in the
park. Each Tuesday throughout the summers as many as 400 children
with parents attend. This community event is such a worth while
cause for our attention and donations.

President's Message Monday night bingo has been very successful. Thanks to Heather and Barb and the other volunteers. If it keeps up we will have to change our meeting night to Tuesdays permanently. This will have to be approved by grand and will take a change to our bylaws. The bylaw committee will be meeting to make other changes that should be made and then there will be three readings before anything can be done. The flea market is dropping off a little because of summer and the lack of sellers. However we do have couple of tool tables that will be at the August sale on the 28th. We are considering an open house sometime in August but the details are yet to be worked out. We are in the process of ordering new pens with aerie website on them. Should have them by September.
New hot water system to be installed Tues. July 19. We still need volunteers to do the occasional bingo night and the bar can always use help. We would like to see some new faces to help out but we realize everyone is busy with day to day life. However if you can spare an hour please do so. The Monday night bingo seems to be a success but it is still only a trial. We installed a blue box for pull tabs in the hall for bingo and other adult functions when we have them. Thanks to Deanna and Desi for painting the cabana. They had an idea and carried through with it. Way to go. It looks much neater now. We have the material to roll the roof but we need some good weather to do it. We could use volunteers for that job if we ever get a nice clear week of sun. The meetings will carry on through the summer as we have at least 17 more new members to initiate. We should easily make our target of 200 before the end of the year.

*****We get the Provincial Eagles Convention*****
First Full Weekend in June 2014
The 61st Provincial convention has come and gone and a new slate of officers for 2011/12 have been installed. There were 102 total attendees in Penticton. The total number of Eagles in B.C. equals 4200 we raised a total of $502,720 for charities in 2010/11. A cheque will be presented at the Children’s Miracle Telethon for $100,000. This is presented on behalf of the Provincial Aeries and Auxiliaries for the President's and Madame President’s charities. The Eagles in B.C. can take a large bow for raising this much money. The new Rewards Program will be posted on the lounge bulletin board. There were two changes to the bylaws and these will be posted also. The upstairs washrooms have been painted and the ladies have new sinks and mirrors thanks to John Playle. He and his wife Angie worked very hard last week to do them and I would like to thank them for their hard work. We are going to put sinks in the men’s washrooms in the near future. Larry and John repaired the parking lot where the garbage truck caved in the concrete - thanks to them also. Al applied for and received a Bingo licence for Mondays , so we will be starting Monday Night Bingo on June 20th. We are also trying to get Cachingo, the Provincial Bingo game into our hall. Al is in the process of applying to lottery for it. We are not sure what it entails. We may have to change our meeting nights to accommodate Monday Bingo, but this will be temporary until we see if it catches on. I hope more members can come out to the meetings and I realize everyone is busy with their own lives, but, if you get a free couple of hours on meeting night come and share your ideas with us. The meetings are usually no longer than 1 to 2 hours at the most and members input would be appreciated.

The Hope and area Fraternal Order of Eagles Aeirie and the Auxilary are doing the organization proud. They have done a lot of refurbishing to the building inside and out. The building now looks appealing, comfortable, and clean. Our volunteers have a better place to work in and are proud as they cater the many functions throughout the year. The men are doing such a great job with the carpentry and painting. And our ladies have worked hard alongside them. I am pleased at the way we are all pulling together and completing the work together. The Eagles bingo, cabana, and flea market are just some of the projects to which we have proudly given our time and volunteer labor. And we give our help freely so that others in the community can benefit. Some of those who the Hope Eagles have donated to this year include: Drivers for Cancer, school bursaries, Hope Community Services christmas hampers, Fraser Canyon Hospice Society, Fraser Hope Lodge, Hope Search and Rescue, the children's Christmas party, Meals on Wheels and Hope Minor Hockey. We also donate to the Kidney Foundation, Diabetes, Muscular Dystrophy, B.C. Children's Hospital, the Cancer Society, Rick Hanson, Alzheimers, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and Hope Crime Prevention. All of this money is raised year round by catering special events, the bingo night lunch counter and our flea market, Friday night dinners and meat draws. We are people helping people all year round. Our hearts are in the right place at all times and we appreciate all who have made this a special place to live.

Mother's Day pancake breakfast was a hit at the Hope Eagles hall thanks to some great fry cooks like Larry Kellum. Over 100 people attended the breakfast on Sunday, with volunteers serving up over 20 flats of eggs and 15 pounds of bacon. Vera Murphy was awarded this year's Mother of the Year plaque, escorted to the breakfast by many of her children and grandchildren. All funds raised at the annual Mother's Day breakfast go towards the Eagles Charity Fund. Simone Rolph photo
"It's the working man's club" — a place where blue-collared members have found fraternal fellowship and served their community for over 60 years. With a motto of 'People helping People', the Hope Eagle Aerie #2690 has a proud history. "The club was first founded in 1949 in Chilliwack, but with so many people attending the meetings from here, two years later they decided just to move to Hope," said club secretary Allan Derick. And back then there were some real hands-on, make-it-happen, members, like Joe Buck, of Buck's Confectionary, Dr. Robert Morrison, the town's family doctor, and Ken James, the founder of Brigade Days ... in naming just a few. Recently some of the club's other long-standing members were recognized including a life-time membership presented to John Kellum. Eagles, Mike Kemish, a 50-year member, and Stan Gelush, a 30-year member, were also recognized for their club service. "Kellum is the one who dug the hole right here!" jokes Derick, from the basement lounge of the Eagles Hall, a building built by volunteers for volunteers, including the much-needed heavy equipment offered up by Kellum. Eagles members are no stranger to long standing stories, especially after a metal Eagle weighing hundreds of pounds disappeared from the clubhouse and magically re-appeared decades later, worn and rusty from "its many travels." And the camaraderie between members is evident in everything thing the club accomplishes, even the funds for building supplies were raised through debentures sold to founding members and slowly paid back over the years. "Back then citizens took the time to be there for their community." This year, and although down from their usual $18,000 to $13,500, donations by the club to a long list community groups continue with community programs including Story Time in the Park, search and rescue, minor hockey, and the Hope Secondary bursary fund receiving or about to receive generous grants. "We were at one time the biggest per capita donor to the diabetes association for many years," added club president Herb Smith. "But donations are down this year because of the changes to the drinking and driving laws." And as society changes, so are the Hope Eagles. "It was a men's club up until a few years ago; I signed up a woman and almost got abolished for it," jokes Derick. "But it's the law too and they finally did give up and accept women into the club three years ago." Once a place where people came together for fellowship, not only are the new laws hitting the club hard, but TVs, laptops and Facebook. "People just don't have to leave their homes anymore," added Derick. But with their popular meat and 50/50 draws, bingo, a brightened-up lounge, and a renovated banquet hall, the club hopes to fulfill its destiny of people helping people for many years to come. Even the exterior of the clubhouse at the corner of Fort Street and Fourth Avenue has sparked up interest with new paint, new signage, and a new Eagle carving. In honour of the many other members who brought the community club through the decades, from founding member Ken Byron, who still gets regular club updates at the age of 90 at his home on the Salt Spring Island, to remembering Nick Nickeforek, who as long standing club bartender poured his last beer on his 90th birthday, the club working to win over new members. "Just $10 to join, $20 each year," adds Smith. "It's a nice place to spend time." For info on joining the club call 604-869-2560 and check out the club's new website at www.foe2690hopebc.com

The Fraternal Order of Eagles #2690 in Hope pride themselves in
raising money for local charities, with the help of the community
and members they will continue helping as many non profit assoc. as
they can.
We gave $13,500 to local charities after the visitation breakfast. It’s a little disheartening after all the work put in by volunteers some charities fail to show up. It’s only one hour for one of their officers or volunteers to pick up the check, but it takes us a whole lot of volunteer hours and one year to raise the money. We are definitely going to be looking at donations next year to see who needs the money and don’t mind coming to get it. I know it was short notice this year but we will be doing it every visitation weekend and will give written notice a month in advance. On a positive note those that did show were very grateful and they do great work with the money we raise. I’d like to thank all the volunteers for putting on the dinner and the breakfast and everyone who helped in the lounge. It took a lot of hard work but the weekend was a big success.
John Playle is new V.P. Charles Mitchell is new conductor. All other officers remain same. No other nominations were made, so no elections were necessary
I would like to take this time to thank Al Betts for holding the office of Vice president and for his help and assistance during my time in office. Al has stated that he will not hold the office in the next term. He feels he has put in his share of work and wants to take a break from it all. He did the office proud and it was a pleasure to work with him. We are looking for and talking to members who might be interested in taking his place. I hope we have a few members who will run for office it’s always good to get new ideas into the club. We have to continue to strive for improvement and to bring new members into the mix. Have a Happy Easter holiday and hope to see more of you at the meetings.

We now have a smoking area for our members. Thanks to all who helped build it.
Provincial President presented the Service Badge Awards
Progress Report -Heat Pumps now installed and working for heat and air conditioning.
Once again the volunteers of Hope Aerie 2690 and the Auxiliary did a wonderful job on the Zone Conference.
The success came from everyone pulling together and getting the job done. I would like to thank Charlie for his rendition of a perfect B.B.Q. supper. There are too many volunteers to mention by name but you know who you are and you should all take a bow.
The Zone Conference was so successful they have booked it for the same weekend next year. Once thanks to everyone.
The time has come the walrus said to speak of many things. Happy new year , we are a little late with this news letter but with our website up and running( foe2690hopebc.com) we are updating events, photos, eagle news from provincial and grand weekly. So we are a little remiss in not informing our offline members.
Work has restarted on the hall with the painting and renovations. We need help and you can volunteer for an hour or a day or a week. No help will be refused . We have the eagle in place and it’s a great addition to our hall. The lounge suffered a small setback from the new laws but it is showing signs of recovery. We are still going ahead with the heat pumps. We have gone out for prices to upgrade the electrical to be able to accommodate the heat pumps ,this job should be completed by the middle of March.
Meals of the month are set to restart but we need more people to step up with their ideas and cooking skills. We cosponsored a Burns night with the Mason’s on Jan 22/11. It was well received and was success for the Mason’s and Eagles . These joint events seem to work well and sets a good example for the community what can be achieved by working together.
When the hall is nearer completion we will be holding a open house more on this when the time comes. Our membership is at 167 and climbing. Our goal was to reach 200 by May 31/11.With everyone’s help we can still make it. Sign up your friends and bring them down to enjoy the good times .
The zone conference is being held in Hope and we will be having steak dinner and a dance for the visitors and the members for $10:00. Date Feb.19 time 7:00 p.m. Come out and watch the ritual competition. Feb. 19th 8:00 A.M.
Don is still collecting bottles for children’s hospital ,so bring them down to the club and he will take them in and build up the money in children’s fund.
Just a reminder to our lounge patrons to keep their personal differences out of the lounge and to watch the language and off coloured jokes. We have had a few complaints and we want to make it a lounge everyone can enjoy.
We will be taking a closer look at our donations this year and the organizations we give to. We don’t want it to become just automatic that we give because we do every year. We need to be sure our money is going to the right causes and that giving is a two way street. We have approved the building of a decent smoking shelter and just have to come up with a design and hopefully some help from the smokers to build it.
Elections are nearing so hope to see more members out to the meetings and get your input into the business of the club.
